Junkyard Jonny teaches

Juankyard Symphony's Junk Pack
(2 performers)(Homebase: Ottawa)
(leader: Jonny)
Comprising of a 60 min Recycle Rock show and a 2hr rhythm and recycling workshop, the Junk Pack will fill the whole day with awesome activities, great learning, and great fun, all centered around the theme of rhythm and recycling. If you have the time and were planning on having a show anyway, you might as well get the full mileage out of the junk and add in a workshop as well for not much extra cost. This package is great for schools all levels, and day camps.

In the workshop students learn the importance of rhythm in music and life. In a drum circle fashion using reused materials for percussion instruments, Junkyard Symphony teaches the basics of rhythm such as tempo, beat, and dynamics. They also cover the values of quarter notes, eight notes, half notes and whole notes and the students learn a series of syncopated rhythms. Add in a cheer box and a few rhythmic games and the workshop becomes a "Stomp" for students!

As well as learning the basics of rhtyhm, students will learn how to make a junk drum from reused materails such as plastic water bottles and tin cans. The importance of recyling and the Four R's, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rock is covered while students learn how to have fun while saving the earth.

Here are the materials that students will need to bring:
2 small plastic water or pop bottles (empty and dry)
2 small tin soup cans (empty and dry)
2 chopsticks or unsharpend pencils
Colour markers or pencil crayons
1/2 cup of rice, beans or macaronni

Lastly, students from grade 6 and up will also get to play Junkyard Symphony's ever popular game "Rhythm Ball." A sport that mixes music with physical activity. They'll love this.

Duration: 60 min show, 2hr workshop.
Max: 350 partipants for the show, and max 30 for the workshop.

Background
Junkyard Jonny, aka Jon Olsen, founder of Junkyard Symphony has been playing on pots and pans since the age of four and has never really stopped. He took private drum lessons for five years as a child then entered the concert bands and jazz bands in middle school and high school. As well as being an honors student in the French immersion program, he won the overall music award and most spirited student award at high school graduation for his creative efforts in forming The Enviro Band , a collection of 20 or so concert band members who played radical rhythms on recycle bins and pickle buckets for their Earth Day ceremonies.
