Recorded at: Distortion Studios in 2000 Sound Engineering: Jay Ruston Mastering: Peter Gilroy Composer: Jonny Olsen Musicians Tony Raybould: Bath tub, buckets, oil drum, hub cap, cow bell. Jonny Olsen: Pots and pans, buckets, recycle barrel, kitchen sink, tire rim, hub cap, cow bell, horn, cookie tray. Special Notes This particular version of the 'Funk on the Junk' is performed on Junkyard Symphony's Super Set. That's the one with the pots and pans, bath-tub and even the kitchen sink. All of Junkyard Symphony's shows start out with a rocking percussion jam so it is appropriate that the CD starts out with one as well. Track 2: Summer Duration: 2 minutes 59 seconds. Recorded at: Pebble Studios in 2005 Sound Engineering: Peter Gilroy Mastering: Peter Gilroy Composer: Jonny Olsen Musicians Jonny Olsen: Piano, wash tub bass, djembes, junk drum set (Bucket toms, hub cap open hi-hat, stove top reflector pans closed hi-hat, recycle barrel bass drum, salad bowl cymbals, cow bell, water jug snare with beer caps, newspaper cymbal, oil can lid gong, pop lid tamborine.) Special Notes Enter instrumental elevator music with junk. 'Summer' is part 1 of a collection of 4 songs. The mood of the song is playful and jovial to illustrate the feeling that the season of summer gives us. Jonny began piano lessons at the age of 6, however he wasn't keen on the strict teaching styles and boring songs, so he quit his lessons and began to play on his own, composing his own songs. While his interest in music focused primarily on the drums and the frenzy of its noise, the piano was a quiet diversion for him when his ears began to hurt. Track 3: Fall Duration: 2 minutes 46 seconds. Recorded at: Pebble Studios in 2005 Sound Engineering: Peter Gilroy Mastering: Peter Gilroy Composer: Jonny Olsen Musicians Jonny Olsen: Piano, wash tub bass, djembes, junk drum set (Bucket toms, hub cap open hi-hat, stove top reflector pans closed hi-hat, recycle barrel bass drum, salad bowl cymbals, cow bell, water jug snare with beer caps, newspaper cymbal, oil can lid gong, pop lid tamborine.) Special Notes 'Fall' is part 2 of a collection of 4 songs. Fall is the first song that Jonny ever composed on the piano at the age of 8, developing it over the years until he could finally afford to record it at the age of 32. This particular piece is performed only on the black keys of the piano. At the end of the song the tune seems to fall down, as do the leaves of the trees. Track 4: Winter Duration: 3 minutes 10 seconds. Recorded at: Pebble Studios in 2005 Sound Engineering: Peter Gilroy Mastering: Peter Gilroy Composer: Jonny Olsen Musicians Jonny Olsen: Piano, wash tub bass, djembes, keyboard strings, keyboard xylophone, keyboard timpani, junk drum set (Bucket toms, hub cap open hi-hat, stove top reflector pans closed hi-hat, recycle barrel bass drum, salad bowl cymbals, cow bell, water jug snare with beer caps, newspaper cymbal, oil can lid gong, pop lid tamborine.) Special Notes 'Winter' is part 3 of a collection of 4 songs. The mood of this song is dark and busy to depict the fury of snow storms and cold winter winds. At Tempus Sans ITC the song mellows out, as does winter when the snow clouds disappear, the sun shines brightly on the snow, and the cold winter winds take a break. Track 5: Spring Duration: 3 minutes 18 seconds. Recorded at: Pebble Studios in 2005 Sound Engineering: Peter Gilroy Mastering: Peter Gilroy Composer: Jonny Olsen Lyrics: Jonny Olsen Musicians Jenn Kee: Vocals Jonny Olsen: Piano, wash tub bass, djembes, keyboard strings, keyboard xylophone, keyboard timpani, junk drum set (Bucket toms, hub cap open hi-hat, stove top reflector pans closed hi-hat, recycle barrel bass drum, salad bowl cymbals, cow bell, water jug snare with beer caps, newspaper cymbal, oil can lid gong, pop lid tamborine.) Special Notes 'Spring' is part 4 of a collection of 4 songs. This song is the bridge between the instrumental soundscape and the folk soundscape, as Junkyard Jen enters the picture halfway through the composition. Jen sings opera but in this song she features the sweet side of her voice. In the background you can hear the sounds of spring; rain, thunder, gentle breezes and singing birds. Yes, it sounds a little cheesy, but it wouldn't be a Junkyard Symphony CD without a little fromage bleu. Click here for lyrics to this song Track 6: Angel Duration: 3 minutes 55 seconds. Recorded at: Pebble Studios in 2004 Sound Engineering: Peter Gilroy Mastering: Peter Gilroy Composer: Jonny Olsen Lyrics: Jonny Olsen Musicians Jenn Kee: Vocals Dave Milliken: : Accoustic and Electric guitar. Hans Levac: : Bass guitar. Tony Raybould: Djembes. Jonny Olsen: Junk drum set (Bucket toms, hub cap open hi-hat, stove top reflector pans closed hi-hat, recycle barrel bass drum, salad bowl cymbals, cow bell, water jug snare with beer caps, newspaper cymbal, oil can lid gong, pop lid tamborine.) Special Notes 'Angel' is a song Jonny wrote for his wife Alma, whom he married in June of 2003, but this song can apply to anyone who has found their "Angel". Jenn sang this song in one take. SomeTempus Sans ITC relationships, and songs just work. This song has an extended five minute long version with a rocking guitar solo in the middle, but alas, rocking guitar solos went out with the 80's, and so did this one. Sorry Dave, there just wasn't enough room on the CD. We'll put it on the next one. Click here for lyrics to this song Track 7: Darkness Duration: 4 minutes 54 seconds. Recorded at: Pebble Studios in 2004 Sound Engineering: Peter Gilroy Mastering: Peter Gilroy Composer: Jonny Olsen Lyrics: Jonny Olsen Musicians Jenn Kee: Vocals Dave Milliken: : Accoustic and Electric guitar. Hans Levac: : Bass guitar. Tony Raybould: Djembes. Jonny Olsen: Junk drum set (Bucket toms, hub cap open hi-hat, stove top reflector pans closed hi-hat, recycle barrel bass drum, salad bowl cymbals, cow bell, water jug snare with beer caps, newspaper cymbal, oil can lid gong, pop lid tamborine.) Special Notes 'Darkness' is about the immense feeling of solitude one gets after a relationship break-up, and then the night arrives bringing even more emptiness. Everyone can identify with this song. The key is in the line "In the end if you've loved or you've lost, It doesn't matter, what matters is that you tried." Not to worry. Eventually the sun rises. Recorded at: Pebble Studios in 2004 Sound Engineering: Peter Gilroy Mastering: Peter Gilroy Composer: Jonny Olsen Lyrics: Jonny Olsen and Jacob Two Two Musicians Jenn Kee: Vocals Dave Milliken: : Accoustic and Electric guitar. Hans Levac: : Bass guitar. Tony Raybould: Djembes. Al Guevremont: Saxophone. Jonny Olsen: Junk drum set (Bucket toms, hub cap open hi-hat, stove top reflector pans closed hi-hat, recycle barrel bass drum, salad bowl cymbals, cow bell, water jug snare with beer caps, newspaper cymbal, oil can lid gong, pop lid tamborine.) Special Notes In this song the folk gets a shot of funk with the awesome talents of Algie on saxophone. The song was originally performed by the band Jacob Two Two when Jonny was their drummer in 1999, 2000. Jacob Two Two was gracious enough to let Jonny use the co-written lyrics to the song in Junkyard Symphony. The idea of walking on water suggests that everyone is capable of doing something incredible. While it seems at Tempus Sans ITC that fate has control over our lives and our ability to be incredible, there just might be a possibility that fate is in our own hands....or feet....so take a walk on the water, and make some waves! Recorded at: Pebble Studios in 2004 Sound Engineering: Peter Gilroy Mastering: Peter Gilroy Composer: Jonny Olsen Lyrics: Jonny Olsen Musicians Jenn Kee: Vocals Dave Milliken: : Accoustic and Electric guitar. Hans Levac: : Bass guitar. Tony Raybould: Djembes. Al Guevremont: Saxophone. Jonny Olsen: Junk drum set (Bucket toms, hub cap open hi-hat, stove top reflector pans closed hi-hat, recycle barrel bass drum, salad bowl cymbals, cow bell, water jug snare with beer caps, newspaper cymbal, oil can lid gong, pop lid tamborine.) Special Notes 'Shine' is about the amazing phenonmenon of "love at first sight", when you see someone for the first time, and there is an immediate sense of attraction as a curious glow shines down on you like a freight train. If this happens to you, then you better step back because the Love Express is about to stop at your station, or.... run you over (Never lay down on the tracks). Either way you are in for one heck of a funky ride, so let's just hope you have a ticket for the train. Whatever you do, don't let the train pass your station without getting on. It might not pass your way again. If it's the wrong train, you can always get off at the next stop. This song was written for Jean and Lloyd Olsen, Jonny's grandparents who met in a such a way at a nurses dance, many moons ago in Saskatoon. Recorded at: Distortion Studios in 2000 Sound Engineering: Jay Ruston Mastering: Peter Gilroy Composer: Jonny Olsen Musicians Tony Raybould: Bath tub, buckets, oil drum, hub cap, cow bell. Jonny Olsen: Pots and pans, buckets, recycle barrel, kitchen sink, tire rim, hub cap, cow bell, cookie tray, street cleaner brushes (Kalimba), PVC tube (didgeridu), udu drum (Bass). Jean Sebastien Lacombe: Steel Drum Marcus Maidment: Vocal Effects Special Notes 'Junk' is the theme song to Junkyard Symphony. The style of the song follows the 1960's surf tunes which Jonny and Christian would listen to on their 8 track player in the first Junkyard Symphony Van, songs like 'Wipeout', 'Pipeline', and 'Hiawaii Five-O'. The melody in the first section of the song is being played by a kalimba, made from street cleaner bushes. A kalimba is a thumb piano, also called an mbira which originates in Africa. The udu drum, which is a clay pot with a hole on the side, was used to make the bass of the song. When you slap the hole, it makes a deep "Douuum!" sound. Track 11: Blue Recycle Box Duration: 3 minutes 31 seconds. Recorded at: Distortion Studios in 2000 Sound Engineering: Jay Ruston Mastering: Nick Blagona Composer: Jonny Olsen Lyrics: Jonny Olsen Musicians Tony Raybould: Bath tub, buckets, oil drum, hub cap, cow bell. Jonny Olsen: Vocals, pots and pans, buckets, recycle barrel, kitchen sink, tire rim, hub cap, cow bell, cookie tray, glasses, PVC tubes (didgeridu), udu drum (Bass). Jay Ruston: Drum loops Cynthia Laroque: Background vocals Jay-Ess Lacombe: Steel Drum Special Notes The Soundscape changes to hip-hop as Jonny features his rapping talents in 'Blue Recycle Box, a remix of the same song off the very first Junkyard Symphony CD "Drum or Die". Cynthia Laroque sings the background vocals. Jonny and Christian performed the first version of this song on the television show "JONOVISION". You can watch the video on the Junk Videos Page.
